Expectations for Seth Meyers at 2015 NFL Honors

Timothy RappJan 31, 2015

Since the NFL has found a way to make the Super Bowl a two-week event that culminates in what has essentially become a national holiday around the country when the game itself is played, it's only fitting that the league would host its annual award show, the NFL Honors, the evening before the game.

This year, Seth Meyers will take over as host of the show, which airs Saturday, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Meyers will take the reins of a show where several illustrious awards are announced, chief among them The Associated Press NFL MVP award. You can find the full list of awards at NFL.com.

The newest Hall of Fame class will also be introduced.

Meyers has big shoes to fill, of course, as Alec Baldwin hosted the show the past three years. Meyers has the chops, however. He not only has his own late-night show on NBC now, but he also anchored the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update desk for years.

He's also no stranger to major awards shows or banquets. He hosted the ESPY Awards in 2010 and 2011, and he was the keynote speaker at the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner, where he crushed it.

Meyers is one of the brighter comedic minds out there, so he'll bring the funny at this year's event. In a year dripping with controversy, it will be interesting to see what Meyers will bring to the table in his opening monologue.

It's hard to imagine the league would want him taking it to task on its response to the Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson incidents, for example, though Deflategate and Marshawn Lynch's media appearances will likely get plenty of play.

Regardless of his material, expect Meyers to be funny, smart and edgy without stepping over the line.
