BMW Super Bowl Commercial 2015: Watch 'Newfangled Idea' Ad

Mike ChiariFeb 1, 2015

BMW wanted to impress upon Super Bowl XLIX viewers the importance of its technological advancements, and it undoubtedly did so in an innovative and entertaining way with its "Newfangled Idea" ad.

The commercial starts with Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel showcasing their complete lack of knowledge regarding the Internet on a 1994 episode of Today.

Fast forward to 2015, and the news personalities are seen sitting in the BMW i3 electric car having a similarly confused conversation.

BMW punctuates the ad with the tagline, "Big ideas take a little getting used to."

Couric and Gumbel undoubtedly come off looking like good sports in the commercial, and Couric in particular is able to look back on her previous Internet ignorance fondly, as she told Ben Popken of Today.com:

"

It was the object of ridicule all over the Internet, and I thought it was funny. But while it was certainly worthy of mockery, it also captured a period. It was not so long ago when email and the Internet were novel, and not something that was in everyone's pockets.

There's people who look back and say that in hindsight, there was this transitional technology. It was really so new back then and then we see how it evolved.

"

There are few (if any) greater innovations than the Internet, and while BMW comparing its i3 to that may be a bit premature, the commercial certainly makes a strong statement.

Thanks to a mixture of humor and history, BMW hit a home run with its Super Bowl ad.
