WWE Rumors: Examining Latest Buzz Around Brock Lesnar, Rey Mysterio and More

Ryan DilbertJan 20, 2015

Rumors tend to circulate around both Brock Lesnar and Rey Mysterio, two WWE Superstars reportedly poised to make moves in the near future.

For Lesnar, there are more rumblings about him returning to the Octagon and now some about who he would trade blows with if he did. Mysterio fans have to be tired of all the reports of his return to action leading to nothing, but another one has emerged, pointing to a possible date for his comeback.

Other WWE rumors cover the thought process behind Jerry Lawler's move to SmackDown and who might join the Royal Rumble as surprise entrants.

We begin with Mysterio, a common subject of rumors and false hope these days.

Update on Mysterio's Possible Return

Mysterio hasn't competed in a WWE ring since last April, per CageMatch.net. Between then and now there has seemingly been a constant cacophony of speculation, gossip and rumors. His fans have little else to subsist on.

Add one more report to the mix. According to F4WOnline (h/t Wrestling Inc), there is a small chance that Rey Mysterio returns at the Royal Rumble.

That's certainly the easiest way to put him back into the mix. The trouble is that it's not clear whether he and WWE have worked things out. In October, PWInsider's Mike Johnson summed up the situation when he reported, "Sources indicate that Mysterio and WWE have not been on the same page for some time after Mysterio's WWE contract extended."

There has been no clear indication that this situation has changed. Mysterio may show up at the Rumble, but it's not something anyone should expect to happen.

Rumored Rumblers

The Royal Rumble traditionally welcomes a number of surprise names. Injured stars making their way back and names from the past all join in the fun.

As for who may be popping up on the latest edition of the pay-per-view, one report provides two potential spoilers.

According to PWInsider Elite (h/t Wrestling Inc), WWE is planning on bringing back Bo Dallas for the Rumble. The report also notes there has been a push to have Diamond Dallas Page appear as a surprise entrant.

WWE.com reported in November that Dallas would be out of action "for six to eight weeks" due to a foot injury. More than that amount of time has passed, so it would be no surprise to see Dallas back. The Rumble format is a simple way to reintroduce him as well.

As for Page, he may have a previous engagement. The Wrap reports that Page, along with Scott Hall and Jake Roberts are in Park City, Utah, "for the slamdance premiere of "The Resurrection of Jake the Snake Roberts.'" The trio are also scheduled to host a Royal Rumble viewing party.

That certainly sounds like WWE is going to have turn to some other stars for its nostalgia fix.

Backstage Word on Commentary Team Change

WWE has changed up who does announcing on its two top shows. Booker T is now doing Raw. Lawler has slid over to SmackDown.

There may be several things at play with the move.

PWInsider reports (h/t Wrestle Zone) that Lawler moved to SmackDown to improve the credibility of SmackDown, trying to elevate it to the level of Raw. The reported idea is to balance out the two shows and not have SmackDown feel like the "B" show.

In addition, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestle Zone), there is a feeling backstage that WWE is looking to phase out Lawler.

Adding Byron Saxton to the SmackDown team is a move toward youth. Perhaps WWE goes further in that direction in the near future, pulling up Alex Riley or Jason Albert from NXT to take Lawler's place.

While there is nothing concrete that Lawler is on his way out, he has been commentating for WWE since the '90s. Every run has to end.

The Beast on the Move?

Despite him still being under contract with WWE and still serving as its top champion, many believe that Lesnar will be leaving pro wrestling for a return to UFC.

The latest word on that comes from F4WOnline, who reports (h/t Wrestling Inc) there have been talks at UFC about Lesnar's return, with one possibility that he fights Frank Mir again.

Mir welcomed Lesnar to the UFC back in 2008, by defeating him with a kneebar submission. Lesnar responded with a TKO win at UFC 100. It makes sense that UFC would be considering a rubber match, even if it's not certain Lesnar is leaving.

This adds to growing speculation about Lesnar changing careers again. It follows UFC President Dana White saying of Lesnar in November, as reported by Fox Sports, "We have a great relationship with him. He's healthy and he has said that he's interested in fighting again."

Should Lesnar lose the world title at the Royal Rumble, the rumors of his imminent exit will only get louder.
