Future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki is just 156 hits shy of reaching a career milestone of 3,000 hits for his career. It appears he could get the chance to reach that mark with the Miami Marlins.
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com has more on the potential union:
"The Marlins have intensified talks with 10-time All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and are open to a possible two-year deal, MLB.com has learned. Multiple reports on Saturday said talks between the two sides were progressing. Miami is searching for a fourth outfielder, and the 41-year-old appears to be its primary target.
"
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN has more on what the veteran outfielder could bring to the Marlins:
Ichiro is a lifetime .317 hitter who has 112 home runs, 717 RBI, 1,303 runs and 487 stolen bases in his illustrious career to go along with his 2,844 hits, all the more amazing when you consider that he didn't come to Major League Baseball until he was 27 years old. He won the Rookie of the Year and MVP in his first season and has been voted into 10 All-Star games and won 10 Gold Gloves.
Now 41, Ichiro has struggled in recent years as his age has finally caught up to him. He hasn't hit over .300 or had 200 hits in a season since 2010, feats he achieved his first 10 years in the league.
But his veteran presence should help a younger Marlins team should they pull the trigger on signing him. Ichiro isn't an elite player like he once was, but he can still help a team in a more limited role. And you'd be hard-pressed to find many fans who wouldn't love to see him reach 3,000 hits.
