Lions Get Hosed By Goodell On Sportscenter
ALLEN PARK, MI - Wow! Everyone knows that the Detroit Lions are the laughing stock and most criticized organizations in the NFL, but the August 8th presentation of Sportscenter on ESPN and their segment "Mort Goes on the Lions' training camp was a slap in the face for the already disgusted Detroit fans.
Chris Mortensen's "Mort Goes To Camp" segment starts off by showing a few of the Lion training camp highlites that are digestable and ends up talking to Roger Goodell for the remainder of the segment about the re-instated Mike Vick and what that means to the NFL.
Now, everyone should be a fan of Goodell and his efforts to try and clean up professional sports and I'm also a fan of Mike Vick. His re-entry to the NFL is huge, but when that situation takes up the segment of the 0-17 (Dating back to 2008) Detroit Lions and what has been going on in their training camp (With the No.1 Draft Pick, costing the Ford's at least $41.7 million in guaranteed money with the option for $72 million in six years) one might think that ESPN would concentrate more on the lowly Lions than Goodell and his thoughts of Vick.
One might think.
There was no talk or highlites from the Lions and their efforts to re-arrange their organization or a simple video clip from anyone in the Detroit Lions organization, period. All there was, was an interview with Goodell.
One might think that an investigative sports news show might want to inform the public about the trials and tribulations from their first 0-16 team and show how they are working to get back to simple progress and not be the laughing stock of the NFL.
One might think.
Instead, ESPN totally ignored the Lions and their progress, no matter how small it might be and focused on Goodell's thoughts on Vick.
Veteran Quarterback Daunte Culpepper showed up lighter and in-shape to training camp. The Lions added Julian Peterson and Larry Foote to their defense and got the so-called "best quarterback in the draft". With all of that in their favor, ESPN would rather fill their "Lions Camp" segment with how Goodell feels about Mike Vick.
It's "Big Brother" B.S. and Lions fans should be enraged. There are 32 teams in the NFL and ESPN will report on every team's training camp except for Detroit's. ESPN is where most sports fans receive their sports highlites and with the Lions' sub-par segment, Goodell-on-Vick takes precedence?
One migh think that ESPN and Mortensen would have thought about all of these things.
One might think.
