John Cena Winning Championship at Royal Rumble Is the Swerve WWE Needs

Donald WoodJan 12, 2015

Many wrestling fans expect WWE champion Brock Lesnar to successfully retain the title at the 2015 Royal Rumble pay-per-view, but John Cena walking out with the belt is the swerve the company needs heading into the crucial WrestleMania season.

As the 15-time world champion, Cena should win the Triple Threat match against Lesnar and Seth Rollins and leave the Royal Rumble as the company’s champion.

Cena is the biggest name in wrestling over the last decade, and it isn’t even close. Winning the title for the 16th time would tie Cena with Ric Flair for the most world title reigns in modern history and cement his place as one of the greatest of all time.

Heading into WrestleMania 31, Cena holding the title during his endless public appearances and media obligations would bring credibility back to the belt and make it feel important once again as the biggest show of the year approaches.

There is no discounting what Lesnar has accomplished in his career and the aura he carries wherever he goes, but he is hardly on WWE television and appears on very few PPVs each year.

With Cena on Raw every week as the ultimate franchise player, giving him the belt before WrestleMania would be a wise decision.

Add in the fact that the WWE reportedly thinks Lesnar will leave once his current contract expires after WrestleMania, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t MMA Weekly), and the company would be smart to get the title off him as soon as possible.

WrestleMania needs a marquee main event, and there is no questioning the monetary impact of Lesnar, but Cena squaring off against and eventually putting over the Royal Rumble Battle Royal winner would legitimize whoever earns the right.

Instead of beating a part-time champion, Daniel Bryan, Roman Reigns or any of the other possible winners would defeat the face of the company for the last decade and take the championship with which he has become synonymous.

Rollins is an afterthought in this match because no one really gives him a legitimate chance to win. He is the current Money in the Bank holder and doesn’t need the victory at the Royal Rumble. Regardless of whether Cena or Lesnar wins at the Royal Rumble, it’s clear Rollins will be taking the pinfall.

There is a hardcore sect of fans that will always believe in Cena, but the vast majority of the WWE Universe doesn’t think Cena should walk out of the Royal Rumble as champion.

Whether the fans know it or not, though, Cena winning would grant the star who earns the right to main event WrestleMania the best possible match and most impactful moment.
