2015 NFL Draft: 5 Prospects Miami Dolphins Fans Need to Know
It feels like we say this every year, but the 2015 NFL draft is of enormous importance for Joe Philbin and the Miami Dolphins.
This is the point in the year when the deeper scouting and analysis starts up, and it can be overwhelming for most NFL fans to keep track of all the names and prospects as the process wears on.
With that in mind, I tried to pick out a few good names who could be good fits for Miami.
Here are five players Dolphins fans should keep an eye on in the coming months.
DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
1 of 5
The receiving corps is a little bit up in the air right now. Jarvis Landry is the only player who is guaranteed to return next season, so there could be some significant shuffling from the draft.
My favorite receiver this year is not Amari Cooper of Alabama, who seems to be the consensus top guy on most boards. I prefer DeVante Parker, an ultra-athletic wideout from Louisville.
At 6'3", 209 pounds, Parker is built like a No. 1 receiver, and he has the speed and explosiveness to be a threat all over the field.
While he might not be available at 14th overall, he's a guy who will get a lot of attention soon and needs to be high on Miami's boardespecially if Mike Wallace gets cut.
Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington
2 of 5
The biggest hole for the Dolphins is at linebacker.
They rotated guys in throughout the season, and pretty much everyone was dreadful; although a lot of backups were getting way too many snaps, which isn't really their fault.
Two-way star Shaq Thompson fits perfectly into Miami's 4-3 defense as a weak-side linebacker. Thompson is a little undersized at 228 pounds, but he is solidly built and flies around the field making plays on every drive.
He is easily one of the best athletes in the draft. He excelled as a running back (61 attempts, 456 yards, two touchdowns) and as a linebacker for Washington.
Thompson should be Miami's top target right now.
Spencer Drango, OL, Baylor
3 of 5
There are definitely some more notorious offensive lineman in this draft right now (Andrus Peat, Brandon Scherff, Cedric Ogbuehi), but Spencer Drango needs to be on everyone's radar.
Drango has been Baylor's left tackle for three straight years, and he has the quickness and strength to play at that position at the next level.
There's also the chance, however, that his 6'6", 310-pound frame and possibly shorter arms would make him a better fit at the NFL level as a guard.
That type of versatility would be valuable for Miami, who should have Drango circled as a top second-round prospect.
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
4 of 5
Some might notice I attend Wake Forest and accuse me of being a homebody here, but Kevin Johnson is a legitimate first-round prospect at a position of need for Miami.
While Brent Grimes had a good season, Cortland Finnegan and Jamar Taylor can't be counted on as starters in 2015, so general manager Dennis Hickey needs to be looking at potential starter-quality corners in the first round.
At 6'1" with long arms, Johnson has the length to compete in the NFL. He also has some serious big-play ability, and he created a lot of turnovers for Wake.
As a senior, Johnson would be able to come in and compete for a starting job right away, which is valuable in of itself for the Dolphins' reeling defense.
Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma
5 of 5
The defensive line is full of question marks for Miami right now. Will Jared Odrick return? Will Randy Starks be a cap casualty? What will Dion Jordan's and Derrick Shelby's role be in 2015?
Miami could certainly be in the market for a defensive tackle early in the draft, and Jordan Phillips is an ideal Day 2 target.
He's been flying under the radar this season, but the redshirt sophomore has a ton of potential as an interior lineman who can both plug gaps and rush the passer in a 4-3 defense.
At 6'6", 334 pounds, Phillips would bring a ton of size and power to a defensive line that mostly underperformed in 2014.
