Wayne Comments on Leaving Indianapolis

Mike Chappell of ABC 6 reported Wayne's thoughts on the circumstances of Wayne leaving the Colts:

"

"You want to have that storybook ending, you really do,” said Wayne, the No. 2 receiver in club history with 1,070 receptions, 14,345 yards and 80 touchdowns. “I wanted to have that here. I wanted it to last one more year, then I was going to shut it down. That’s what I told them, but they told me they were going in a different direction."

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Wayne is open to playing another season, under the right circumstances:

Mike Wells of ESPN.com revealed Wayne wanted to remain with the Colts for another season:

Reggie Wayne was hoping to sign a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts and then retire, a source told ESPN.com.

The Colts and Wayne never reached the stage where money was discussed, according to the source and the team announced Friday that they would not be re-signing the receiver, who spent his entire 14-year career with the organization.

Wayne Won't Return to Colts

The Colts have decided not to re-sign Wayne, the team announced Friday.

General manager Ryan Grigson noted, "Everyone knows the greatness and history associated with No. 87. He truly is one of a small handful of players who really define the Colts as an organization."

He added, "His dedication and the example he set are second to none. We wish him nothing but the best in whatever new endeavor he pursues."

Wayne, 36, is coming off a down season by his lofty standards. He caught 64 passes for 779 yards and just two touchdowns in 15 games after recovering from a torn ACL in 2013 that held him to just seven contests.

Wayne was asked about his status before the Colts began their playoff run. Chris Wesseling of NFL.com passed along the veteran's response, which came on his weekly WNDE-AM radio show: 

"

If I had to answer that question right now, (the answer) would be 'I will be back.' If the Colts want me. Because I'm not playing for nobody else. They may want to go in another direction. Who knows? ... They're always looking to replace you each year. That's been my motto since 2001.

"

Wayne finished second on the team in receiving yards behind T.Y. Hilton in 2014. In his 14-year career, all with the Colts, he has career numbers of 1,070 receptions for 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns.
