Knowshon Moreno: Latest Rumors and Speculation on Dolphins RB

Matt FitzgeraldFeb 5, 2015

Knowshon Moreno was a high-profile free agent last offseason, moving on from his best year with the Denver Broncos into a new deal with the Miami Dolphins. It is unclear whether or not he will remain in Miami after a disappointing season with the Dolphins.

Dolphins Beat Writer Expects Dolphins to Go Younger at RB

Thursday, Feb. 5

James Walker of ESPN.com addressed a question in his mailbag, which asked whether or not Moreno would return to the team:

"

Knowshon Moreno was expected to fill that power-tailback role that I mentioned in the previous question. But Moreno is too injury prone, which is the reason the Dolphins signed him to a one-year contract in 2014. Moreno suffered two knee injuries and an elbow injury during his short tenure in Miami last season. He will be 28 in July and has a lot of tread on the tires. Moreno is a solid player when healthy. But I expect the Dolphins to go younger at the position and find a power back who is more durable.

"

The 27-year-old star has played a full 16 games just twice in six seasons and appeared in just three contests for Miami before suffering a torn ACL. It's the second time Moreno has had such an injury, which is cause for alarm with regard to his NFL future.

But the brilliance Moreno showed in 2013 as a Bronco, where he ran for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns and added three more scores on 60 receptions, is hard to ignore.

Moreno was widely considered a first-round bust until he at long last showed he could fulfill that gaudy status. He was averaging 4.8 yards per carry for the Dolphins before his year was cut short, too.

With how interchangeable running backs have become in the modern NFL, it's difficult to determine whether Moreno would ever get a shot at a No. 1 role again. His minimal one-year, $3 million contract with Miami is evidence of how even someone with the recent success Moreno has had can't command a ton of money.

A time-share scenario may actually be in Moreno's best interest since he could ease his way back into the lineup and ensure he's healthy before he hits the gridiron again in game action.
