Kyle Orton Retires: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

R. Cory SmithDec 29, 2014

On the heels of one of his best seasons in the NFL, Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Orton has announced he will retire.

Orton announced the news Monday following the conclusion of the regular season.

"I just have been going at it for 10 years and it's just a family decision and I've decided to get home and be a dad and call it a day," said Orton, per Chris Brown of the Bills' official website.

Taking over for EJ Manuel for the final 12 games of the season, Orton finished with 3,018 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. During that span, Buffalo went 7-5 and narrowly missed out on the playoffs at 9-7.

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com offered his take on the news:

Orton was reportedly leaning toward retirement last offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, but was a valuable asset for the Bills in 2014 instead. Losing his consistency under center will be a huge blow for a franchise that appears to be on the rise.

The move also puts pressure on Manuel, who played in only five games during his second season with the Bills. After accounting for six total touchdowns and three interceptions this season, the 2013 first-round pick might have to prove he's ready next year.
