2015 NFL Draft: Destinations for Top College Quarterbacks

Dan TylickiDec 18, 2014

As the 2014 NFL season comes to a close, it's clear which teams have major question marks at quarterback heading into 2015, and naturally those teams will be looking toward the 2015 NFL draft. Unfortunately for them, this is not a strong field, and there will likely be significant reaches as a result.

There are six teams with three or fewer wins. Discounting the two with rookie quarterbacks and adding in the Chicago Bears with the benching of Jay Cutler, there are five teams that could snag a quarterback in the draft.

Of the top college quarterbacks, some would fit on any team, while others have strengths and weaknesses more suited to certain NFL teams. What are the best destinations for each quarterback?

Brett Hundley

1 of 4

I supported Hundley returning to UCLA for his junior year, as I did not think he was ready for the NFL yet. After another college season, both his strengths and weaknesses are more firmly etched in stone.

His numbers have been great this year, completing over 70 percent of his passes with only five interceptions. But playing from the shotgun often and having that run-first mentality will be an issue in the NFL, though he does have the size to take a hit or two.

It may require him falling to the second round, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would fit well with Hundley. He will have a rising star in Mike Evans to throw to while he adjusts to the game.

It helps that he shares many of Mike Glennon's strengths, such as a good arm, while avoiding his weaknesses, such as his lack of movement, so drafting him should be an immediate improvement for Tampa Bay.

Marcus Mariota

2 of 4

There's a reason Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy this year. He has all the ability you could want in a quarterback. He ran a relatively simply offense in Oregon and may need to adjust to the pros, but talent-wise there is nothing bad to say about his game.

Due to the above, it's likely he will be the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, which means that whichever team lands there should be satisfied. Which team does he fit best with, however?

The Tennessee Titans have some solid receivers in Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter who have speed and can work with Mariota's quick play on the field. He will have Nate Washington as a security blanket to get through any growing pains as well.

The Titans have some talent on offense. They just need a good quarterback to get the most out of it, and Mariota is that guy.

Dak Prescott

3 of 4

Dak Prescott burst onto the scene this season after bringing Mississippi State into the limelight en route to the No. 1 ranking for a short time. Of those on the list, he is the one who may return to school, since another year could both turn him into a Mississippi State legend and fine-tune his mechanics.

First and foremost, Prescott is a tough player. He's not afraid to get hit when running, and his awareness is among the best in this year's class. His mechanics are not all there yet, but he's good to go between the ears in the NFL.

A player like that is what the Chicago Bears need right now, since they seem to be moving on from Cutler. He fits the Bears' playing style, and he will have plenty of talent in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery to help get through the tougher matchups.

Prescott will likely be available in the second round for the Bears to pick up, and I see no reason to pass on him, especially since it looks like both Cutler and Marc Trestman will not be around in 2015.

Jameis Winston

4 of 4

Jameis Winston is the rare player who has both the on-field talent to be a potential first overall pick while having enough off-the-field issues to make using a draft pick on him a calculated risk at best.

As a result, while few doubt what Winston can do on the field, the team that selects him will have to be one that can look past his transgressions and look toward what he can do moving forward.

For Winston to end up on the New York Jets only seems natural as a result. They need a quarterback badly who can both play on the field and withstand the media presence that New York will bring. At least for now, at least one member of the media is on Winston's side, with Kevin Kernan of the New York Post considering Winston a "perfect fit."

It makes too much sense on both sides, especially if the front office is blown up at season's end; the new front office could make an all-or-nothing splash from the get-go that could end up working out wonderfully.
