Is James Davis The Browns' "Terrell"
Let's compare the great Terrell Davis, who finally pushed John Elway to 2 championship rings, to our late-round bloomer, James Davis.
Terrell Davis
Height: 5-11 Weight: 210 Age: 36
Born: 10/28/1972 San Diego , CA
College: Georgia
Experience: 8 Seasons
----------------------------
James Davis | #28 | RB
Height: 5-11 Weight: 218 Age: 23
Born: 1/1/1986
College: Clemson
Experience: Rookie
The interesting and uncanny aspect is the draft postion of both players: Terrell at 1995 / Round: 6 / Pick: 196, and James at 2009 / Round: 6 / Pick: 195, one pick apart. Very Good omen, methinks.
Heres the scouting report for James Davis:
Davis has been a consistent performer all four years of his college career. Despite splitting carries with C.J. Spiller, he managed to finish his career with 3,881 yards rushing and 47 touchdowns, a Clemson record and two off from the ACC record.
Strengths
Despite not having tremendous size at 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds, he was the power back of the Clemson backfield, showing the ability to break leg tackles and bull through runners.
His main asset though is quickness to the hole. Davis can make quick cuts to make defenders miss, and he has the long speed to be a big play threat whenever he touches the ball.
Even though he split carries with Spiller during the past three seasons, Davis still managed to rush for more than 1,000 yards during his sophomore and junior seasons. As a freshman, he rushed for 879 yards and nine touchdowns.
Weaknesses
While Davis does show the occasional power, he is not a power back despite his role as the "thunder" in Clemson's "thunder and lightning" attack. To be effective in that regard in the NFL, he will need to continue putting on more weight.
If he wants to be an all-around back however, he will need to improve on his pass catching. While he appears effective in the passing game, he never caught more than 19 passes in a season and finished his career with 51.
He's also a very poor pass blocker, which will hurt his potential for immediate success in the NFL, as teams will not want to play a rookie running back that will get their quarterback killed.
Draft position
Davis almost came out as a junior and was given a second-round grade by the NFL advisory committee. He chose to stay however, and like the rest of the Clemson offense, he had a disastrous season.
Career lows in rushing yards and average have knocked him to the fourth-to-fifth round area. Still, some teams won't be quite so quick to punish him for having a terrible offensive line in college.
Davis is up to 218 pounds now, and his 4.45 40-time at his pro day was a big improvement from his 4.60 time at the combine. The Seahawks would be hard-pressed to find a better fit in the middle rounds, if they even want a running back, that is.
Let's hope the Browns have finally digged up a late round gem.....
