The Most Underrated Super Bowl Contenders

The Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers are stealing many headlines as the top favorites to win the Super Bowl, but the defending champion Seattle Seahawks are not garnering the respect the team deserves.

Since starting the season 3-3, Seattle has won six of its last seven games and has allowed just 20 combined points over the last three weeks. While the team has a tough divisional matchup against San Francisco in Week 15, the 49ers are coming off a loss to the Oakland Raiders.

On the other hand, the Seahawks are coming off a huge win over the Philadelphia Eagles that featured the team amassing a total of 440 yards of offense (188 rushing and 252 passing) compared to Philly’s 139 total yards.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll spoke to The Associated Press (via ESPN.com), following the win about what helped his team earn the victory, saying, "I have total respect for everything Chip [Kelly] does. Our defense, for the third straight week, did the job for us.”

Two huge factors that play into a serious Super Bowl contender are the ability to play elite defense and the ability to run the ball consistently. The Seahawks are solid in both areas, just as they were last year, and there is no reason to believe they won’t achieve the same feat again this season.

With an elite secondary dubbed the "Legion of Boom" and a tough front seven, Seattle is ranked first in the league, allowing 190.4 passing yards, and it is ranked third in the NFL, allowing 84.1 yards rushing per game. Just as the team shut down Peyton Manning and the Broncos in the championship, every team in the NFL has been put on notice with the Seahawks defense returning to elite form.

The Arizona Cardinals may be leading the NFC West right now, but the defending champions are on the hunt and are looking to claim another division title.

Add in the fact that Seattle still has veteran running back Marshawn Lynch running hard between the tackles and catching the ball out of the backfield (racking up 1,366 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns through 13 games), and the Seahawks are ready to repeat.

As long as quarterback Russell Wilson can continue playing with the intelligence that has made him a force since joining the league, Seattle should be able to run through the NFC competition before taking down the AFC’s representative in the championship.

At 5-1 odds, bet on the Seahawks repeating as Super Bowl champs with confidence.
