Elvis Dumervil Sets Ravens' Single-Season Sack Record

Bleacher Report MilestonesDec 8, 2014

Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil recorded 3.5 sacks in Sunday's 28-13 win over the Miami Dolphins, giving him a franchise single-season record of 16 sacks so far this year, per the Ravens' official website.

Dumervil entered the contest with 12.5 sacks, sitting 2.5 back of the franchise-record 15 compiled by four-time Pro Bowler Peter Boulware in 2001.

While breaking the record Sunday would have been a lofty goal, Dumervil likely knew he had a chance to get there, thanks to a favorable matchup against embattled Dolphins right tackle Dallas Thomas.

Per Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Thomas has the seventh-worst cumulative grade (-18.4) of any offensive tackle this season, despite logging just 255 snaps in five appearances.

Dumervil, on the other hand, has the sixth-best overall grade (18.0) for any 3-4 outside linebacker, with the second-best pass-rushing mark (23.8) at his position.

The 16 sacks tie him with Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston for the NFL lead, but Dumervil's sacks have cost opponents an NFL-high 120 yards, compared to just 70 for Houston's.

The 30-year-old Dumervil has at least 9.5 sacks in each of the last five seasons, with 89 total through the first eight years of his career. He'll likely reach 100 at some point next season and could eventually make a run at a top-20 spot on the all-time sacks list.
