Fantasy Football Week 14: Buying or Selling Top Injured Players

Timothy RappDec 4, 2014

Injuries can literally end your fantasy season at this time of the year. With the playoffs upon us, an injury to a key player can absolutely sink your team. And with several big names potentially out this week, should you be bailing on that player or holding on?

That's the question I'll attempt to answer below. More often than not, I'll always preach patience with your top options. But desperate times call for desperate measures, so there are always a few players you can give up on at this point.

Buying

Despite his on-again, off-again injury woes, I'm still all in on Rashad Jennings. He's simply the more well-rounded player when compared to rookie Andre Williams, and he's played quite well for the New York Giants this year.

Plus, if he is healthy enough to suit up this week he'll be facing a Tennessee Titans defense that has given up an average of 28.4 fantasy points to opposing running backs over their past five games. So yes, I'm absolutely still buying on Jennings.

Ditto for Julius Thomas. In a season that has seen just six players average eight or more fantasy points per game at the tight end position, I'm absolutely buying on Orange Julius the moment he can suit up again. In fact, my fantasy team is in desperate need of him to return sooner rather than later—tight end was my biggest advantage over my opponents to start the season.

Without Thomas in my lineup, it's become a major weakness. Get healthy soon, Julius!

I'm sticking by Andre Ellington, though a bit more tentatively than I would have in the beginning of the season. Ellington went into Week 13 having failed to reach double-digit fantasy points in three straight games, and a concern going forward will be that opposing teams don't fear the passing game with Drew Stanton under center and stack the box.

I'm sticking with Ellington, however, because he remains an important part of Arizona's passing game and will be a valuable dump-off option for Stanton when he's on the field. Ellington is the type of player who can make your afternoon with one long play, after all.

So is DeSean Jackson. Amidst another season of turmoil in Washington, the wide receiver has still managed to register 942 passing yards and five touchdowns. Jackson is about as hit-or-miss as they come at the position, sure, but it only takes one long pass down the field to make starting him worth it.

If he's playing, he's too explosive to sit.

Selling

I'm not sure when Jordan Cameron will return from injury, but he's pretty hard to trust. He hasn't been great on the field since the fist half of last season, for starters, and he'll be returning to a quarterback in Brian Hoyer who has thrown for zero touchdowns and five interceptions in his past two games.

No thanks.

I've been talking about cutting ties with Montee Ball for weeks, but I'm not sure Ronnie Hillman is a player I'd own going forward, either. C.J. Anderson has just been too good, folks, offering the ability to make players miss and catch passes out of the backfield like Hillman with the ability to shed tacklers like Ball.

The Broncos have gone through a few backs this season. Don't be surprised if they settle on Anderson. He's the real deal.

Larry Fitzgerald has been hurt for the past two weeks, sure, but even if he was healthy you wouldn't be starting him. A healthy Fitz registered double-digit fantasy points just three times this season and his fantasy value all but disappears with the limited Stanton under center.
