Trade Deadline Roundup & The Fantasy Ramifications: V-Mart, Peavy & More

Eric StashinJul 31, 2009

It’s been a wild few days, to say the least.  Let’s take a look at all the deals that went down and the fantasy ramifications they brought with them:

  • The Seattle Mariners traded C/1B Jeff Clement (Triple-A), SS Ronny Cedeno, RHP Nathan Adcock (Single-A), RHP Brett Lorin (Single-A) & RHP Aaron Pribanic (Single-A) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Ian Snell & SS Jack Wilson (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Philadelphia Phillies traded RHP Carlos Carrasco (Triple-A), RHP Jason Knapp (Single-A), SS Jason Donald (Triple-A) and C Lou Marson (Triple-A) to the Cleveland Indians for LHP Cliff Lee & OF Ben Francisco.  We didn’t spend much time on this deal, and there certainly has been some new fallout after today’s deals.  We all know Lee’s value as an ace, and that doesn’t change even in a hitter’s park.  Francisco is now a bench player, losing his fantasy appeal.  As for the players the Indians got, with Victor Martinez being sent to Boston, Marson could become an immediate impact player.  I would think Kelly Shoppach will see the biggest increase in playing time, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Indians get Marson up to try and reap some benefts from this deal immediately.
  • The San Francisco Giants traded RHP Tim Alderson (Double-A) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2B Freddy Sanchez (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Seattle Mariners traded OF Wladimir Balentien to the Cincinnati Reds for RHP Robert Manuel (Triple-A).  Balentien was someone that has a lot of talent and could potentially force his way into the Reds outfield.  I’d keep an eye on him, but he’s by no means a sure thing after struggling in the major leagues to the tune of a .210 career average.
  • The Baltimore Orioles traded RHP George Sherrill to the Baltimore Orioles for 3B Josh Bell (Double-A) & RHP Steve Johnson (Double-A) (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates traded LHP John Grabow & LHP Tom Gorzelanny to the Chicago Cubs for RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascaino & 2B Josh Harrison (Single-A).  This one had little fantasy impact outside of leagues that value middle relievers.  Hart was due for a regression anyways, and that just gets worse now pitching for the Pirates.
  • The Seattle Mariners traded LHP Jarrod Washburn to the Detroit Tigers for LHP Lucas French & RHP Mauricio Robles (Single-A) (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Oakland Athletics traded SS Orlando Cabrera to the Minnesota Twins for SS Tyler Ladenford (Single-A) (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers traded RHP Claudio Vargas to the Milwaukee Brewers for RHP Vinny Rottino (Double-A).  Does anybody really care?  While Vargas may get starts, he has little value.
  • The Cincinnati Reds traded INF/OF Jerry Hairston Jr. to the New York Yankees for C Chase Weems (Single-A).  Hairston becomes a role player in New York and has no fantasy value.
  • The Boston Red Sox traded 1B Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves for 1B Casey Kotchman (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The Toronto Blue Jays traded 3B Scott Rolen to the Cincinnati Reds for 3B Edwin Encarnacion, RHP Josh Roenicke & RHP Zach Stewart (Triple-A) (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
  • The San Diego Padres traded RHP Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox for RHP Clayton Richard, LHP Aaron Poreda, RHP Adam Russell (Triple-A) & RHP Dexter Carter (Single-A).  This is the trade that really shocked me the most, as I think it did many.  I wonder what changed for Peavy, he rejected a trade to Chicago early this season.  We’ll have to see what happens when he returns from the DL.  As for the Padres, they appear to have gotten a strong haul.  Richard & Poreda should get a value boost, as both should see starts for the Padres this season, pitching in a ballpark that favors those on the mound.  Poreda & Richard were ranked #2 & 3, respectively, by Baseball America among the team’s prospects prior to 2009.
  • The Cleveland Indians traded C/1B Victor Martinez to the Boston Red Sox for RHP Justin Masterson, RHP Bryan Price (Single-A) & LHP Nick Hagadone (Single-A) (to view the fantasy impact, click here).
