Dean Ambrose Is at His Best Against Bray Wyatt

Tom ClarkNov 27, 2014

Dean Ambrose recently faced off against Bray Wyatt at WWE Survivor Series. The match was the result of several weeks' worth of heat between the two men, and their showdown was surely an exciting one for the WWE faithful.

And while Ambrose's past among rivals like Seth Rollins cannot be ignored, the fact is that his current run against Wyatt fits him perfectly. Indeed, he is excelling against The Eater of Worlds, and he is showing his absolute best right now.

This is a feud that may have been meant to happen from the very beginning. After all, The Shield versus The Wyatt Family was one of the most high-profile rivalries that WWE had and one that fans were anxious to see.

Both were premier factions in WWE, two groups that had risen to the top of the company through both domination and mystery.

The Wyatts vs. The Shield

On one side were The Hounds of Justice. The Shield had done more in a shorter amount of time than arguably any faction in the history of WWE, and it did so through complete domination. Everyone who stood in its way was taken down, and every obstacle put in front of it was crushed. Ambrose, Rollins and Roman Reigns were untouchable, and they became popular despite the fact they were heels.

On the other side was Wyatt's clan. The Wyatt Family was perhaps the most intriguing group that WWE had ever known because of its mysterious origins. Wyatt led Erick Rowan and Luke Harper from the shadows, taking them to the forefront of the company despite no one really understanding their motivations or agenda. They became popular because of their leader, who made compelling television every time he opened his mouth.

And when the two factions finally met in the ring, all hell broke loose. It was inevitable that The Shield would face The Wyatt Family, much in the same way it was inevitable that Ambrose would now face Wyatt.

This is the coming together of two characters who have a shared history—that much is for certain. But it's also the combination of two personalities who are perhaps more similar than fans even realize.

Wyatt is the fanatical cult leader, the smiling madman who plots and schemes to get his way and usually succeeds in doing just that. He controls and manipulates those around him in an attempt to make them subservient, and his warped psyche keeps him on the edge of sanity more often than not.

Ambrose is the unpredictable outcast, the loose cannon who is not bound to anyone's authority. He does not conform to what society expects him to be, and he answers to no one but himself. He is fearless, and he acts without fear of repercussion because mentally he's a bit unstable.

They are two sides of the same coin, two slightly different versions of each other. And while Wyatt is entertaining as always on the mic, it's Ambrose who is rising to the occasion now.

Ambrose's personality is unyielding. He will not give up despite how much he's beaten down or how badly he's outnumbered. He can survive one physical and psychological attack after another, and even though Wyatt is testing him mentally, Ambrose just keeps coming back for more.

Wyatt is not beatable in the traditional sense. Pinning him does not stop him; one loss doesn't even slow him down. The only thing Wyatt cares about is destroying his opponents from the inside out. If he can crack them from the inside, then he wins. It's really all he wants.

The problem is Ambrose is already cracked. Pushing him means he will only reverse his downward spiral; he will push back.

Facing Wyatt is perfect for Ambrose because he has so many opportunities to show his personality, to let his character shine. This is not a straight-up pro wrestling feud because it can't be. This is much deeper and more cerebral than anything currently happening in WWE, and that's why it's the most entertaining feud by far.

Ambrose is at his best when he can flex his muscles creatively and just have fun. That has perhaps never been truer than against The Eater of Worlds. The Lunatic Fringe is completely in his element, and fans have only gotten a glimpse of what these two men are capable of together. Ambrose hopefully has a lot left to do in this rivalry, and he will surely be at his best while doing it.
