Tigers get Jarrod Washburn: Way To Go Dave Dombrowski!

Blake VandeBunteJul 31, 2009

By now you’ve heard that the Tigers made a trade today. We heard quite a bit about how Detroit would probably just try and get bullpen help or a back up catcher, but good ol’ Dave Dombrowski added another starter to the Tigers rotation without giving much up. Here’s the deal:

Tigers Get:

Jarrod Washburn

Luke French

Mauricio Robles

Seems like a pretty good deal, right?  Washburn is 34-years-old, so he’s not likely to be a big part of the Tigers' future. However, he currently sports an ERA of 2.64, which is good for third in the American League.

Luke French looked decent in his limited time with the Tigers and Robles is only 18-years-old, but has not pitched above Single-A yet.

The real nice thing here is that the Tigers have added a ton of depth to their pitching rotation. Washburn is a left-handed hurler, something the Tigers have lacked all season.  He’s also durable and usually stays in games for the long haul. In the last two months, his shortest outing has been six innings. In six of his last ten games he’s lasted at least seven innings.

By adding Washburn to the duo of Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson, the Tigers now have three of the top seven in ERA leaders in the American League. I have no clue the last time Tigers' pitching staff had three dominant pitchers in their rotation. Just wonderful.

Washburn last pitched on Tuesday, so he could very well pitch for the Tigers this weekend against Cleveland.
