Roy Halladay to the Rangers? Interesting, But I Doubt It

Ben CallowayJul 30, 2009

It's been very quiet on the Roy Halladay trading front for a while, but one team still has interest—the Texas Rangers.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan has not been quiet about their interest in Halladay. He has recently been quoted saying, "We are still actively seeking Roy Halladay."

Wouldn't a trade to the Rangers be interesting?

A team that has come out of nowhere, has very little budget, and is very underrated trading for Halladay? The Rangers have been known as the team that has no pitching, but can hit.

Maybe not for long.

The Rangers have held close to the Angels in the AL West, and if they could make this deal, they would easily become the favorites to win the division. They would have an excellent hitting lineup, along with a dominant ace.

Let's look into the likelihood of a deal actually getting done.

The good news: The Jays did have a self-imposed deadline of July 28 in place, but are now willing to go beyond that deadline to get a deal done. That shows that the Jays really do want to move Halladay.

The Rangers are just about the only team still interested in Halladay, and they're definitely the only team with serious interest. If the Jays want to make a deal, they know it would likely have to be with the Rangers.

Texas also has a few prospects that the Jays are interested in. That is a huge step to getting a deal done.

The bad news: Halladay would have to approve any deal before he could be moved. Would he accept a deal to Texas? That could be a real question mark.

Budget—the Rangers are very open about not having money to throw around. There are rumors now that Texas would make the Jays pay a portion of Halladay's salary in any deal.

That would be a huge turn-off.

The Jays had a deal in place with the Phillies earlier in the week. If they really wanted to move Halladay, then he would already be gone. Quite frankly, the Rangers won't have that great of a package.

At this point, I don't expect a deal will be done. That could all change very quickly...it all depends of how badly the Rangers want Halladay.

We will all just have to sit back and find out.

I will make sure to post updates as they come.
