Big Juicin' Papi Propels Boston to Comeback Win Over Oakland

Tony SantorsaJul 30, 2009

Just hours before the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox matinee game today, David Ortiz and all of the baseball world had become known that Ortiz and Manny Ramirez had tested positive for a performance enhancing drug in the 2003 MLB season.

But there was still a game to be played.

Boston had dropped two in a row to Oakland and they sent Jon Lester to the mound to hopefully stop Boston's losing streak.

Lester only lasted 5.2 innings and he gave up 4 runs leaving the score at 4-1 when he was replaced by Manny Delcarmen.

Going into the bottom of the 7th, Boston trailed 5-3. Ortiz came to the plate and the whole baseball world watched as the alleged PED user blasted a Craig Breslow offering into dead center field. Big Papi's three-run homer made the score 6-5 and put Boston on top for good.

Boston tacked on a few more runs and Jonathan Papelbon closed the door with a 8-5 victory and racking up his 26th save on the year.

Ortiz finished the game going 2-3 with a homer and a double with three RBI.

After the game the media wanted answers and Ortiz gave everyone a statement.

Ortiz said that he "had no answers" and that "You guys know I'm a guy who never turns my back on you guys. I've always been a true guy with you guys, and honestly, right now, I don't have any information about it. I'm going to get more info about the situation, and I'm going to honestly tell you guys what's up. But right now, I don't have no answer, no information."

NESN's John Chandler got a chance to question former Red Sox and now Oakland A Nomar Garciaparra about the big news of Manny and Ortiz.

Nomar's response to the anonymous drug test: "And if that was a mess and it's not anonymous, then how much can you believe it? It was a joke, if you really know the way we went through it. It was supposed to be anonymous, and now it's not? Then what is and what isn't? It's unfortunate."

In my opinion, I have to agree with Nomar. This whole thing is a mess. If names are going to be leaked from the supposedly destroyed list, then why not release every name known to be on the list all at once. This just leaves fans of the game wondering who they can and cannot trust.

As the games greatest hitters, Manny Ramirez, David Oritz, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Alex Rodriguez all become known to be PED users, then why can you trust great players like Albert Pujols and Ken Griffey Jr.

The game of baseball is becoming tainted and it's a shame for the players who didn't use any PED because they deserve recognition that they played the game right.

The up-coming weeks should be interesting from how the fans will treat Ortiz and how more details of the story will come about.

Could it be that Ortiz used HGH to recover faster on his bad knees? Who knows. Fans, reporters, and MLB can only wonder what exactly Ortiz tested positive for.
