MLB Trade-Deadline Blog: Halladay, Gonzo Possibly on the Move?

Old AccountJul 30, 2009

We are less then 24 hours away from the MLB Trading Deadline, which ends on Friday July 31. This years deadline was expected to be a slow-one, but as always, talks are heating up with many teams around baseball.

This is your MLB Trade-Deadline blog, which shall be updated throughout portions of the day tomorrow, and updates every 10-20 minutes during the final hours of the deadline. Be sure to keep in touch with this blog all throughout the day!

Breaking News: Jake Peavy traded to Chicago White Sox; Peavy Approves Deal

We are just a few minutes away from the trading deadline. As of now, Victor Martinez has been traded to the Red Sox, while the Twins acquire Orlando Cabrera. Jarrod Washburn also dealt to the Tigers.

Biggest deal on July 30: George Sherrill traded from the O's to Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers upgraded their bullpen Thursday evening in acquiring closer George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles for third base prospect Josh Bell and pitching prospect Steve Johnson. This deal was a win for both of the organizations.

The Dodgers needed an upgrade in the bullpen, especially a seventh-eighth inning man who can hold the fort before Broxton shuts the door. Also, the Dodgers use their pen quite often, and a deal was needed to be made for the Dodgers run in October.

The Baltimore Orioles also came out winners as well. When shopping George Sherrill, Baltimore needed a third base prospect, where the minors does lack in that category.

George was almost an Angel if they decided to give Brandon Wood, one of their top prospects in the system. Bell has been solid in the minors, hitting around 300 this season, with a few homers and RBI'S to his credit.

Steve Johnson has also been solid in the minor leagues, posting an ERA under two. Future closer in Baltimore? After all, there won't be much room in the rotation once Tillman, Arrieta, Matusz, make the show.

Dodgers, Angels, Still Looking for Relief Help

Even with adding George Sherrill to the pen, the Dodgers are not done. Reportedly they are looking to add another reliever before Friday's deadline. The Los Angeles Angels, who failed to acquire Sherrill, have shown interest in Padres reliever Health Bell.

The price may be high on Bell though, who is one of San Diego's bright spots this year, and may be turned off by the asking price.

Roy Halladay: Talks Between
Texas And Toronto Are Heating Up

With quiet talks regarding Toronto's ace Roy Halladay, at this point in time there is only one team having discussions: the Texas Rangers. According to sources, Texas is willing to take on Roy Halladay's entire contract, which would lead to a few salary dumps at the deadline or in the off season.

The situation isn't exactly clear up to this point, as some say reports are false, others think the discussions will go up to late afternoon for sure, whether a deal is done or not.

Red Sox-Padres: Possible Adrian Gonzalez Blockbuster?

What has transpired over the past few hours if the rumor of a Red Sox-Padres discussion that involves Adrian Gonzalez. A few days ago, the Mets were reportedly interested, yet those talks have died down greatly.

Boston has every component to make a deal for Gonzalez, whether it is dealing a prospect in Lars Anderson, who shows great potential as a very young spec. The Sox also have the prized jewl in Clay Bucholtz, who I'm sure San Diego would be interested in.

If Boston did acquire Gonzo, decisions would have to be made on where Youkilis is put on defense, and whether or not David Ortiz hits the bench.

The talks here gives me a gut feeling that if a deal is going to happen, it shall happen around 2.30 PM ET, just around the same time the Red Sox dealt Manny last year. If the talks die, we may hear about it in the early afternoon.

Yankees Show Interest in Washburn; For Most Part Quiet at Deadline

The New York Yankees appear to be quiet at this year's deadline, as Roy Halladay discussions have died down. The team does show interest in Mariners pitcher Jarrod Washburn. No reports on a full offer have been made, so as of now no close deal at this moment.

Tampa
Bay Rays: Quickly Fading, Or Quietly Buying?

Yesterday evening the Rays and Angels were reportedly in talks involving pitcher Scott Kazmir. As of today no update was given on the situation, many believing the deal is dead. I would not rule it out, however, as I'm sure the talks will heat up early in the afternoon.

Tampa has also shown interest in Indians catcher Victor Martinez. With dealing Cliff Lee, you would figure Cleveland would just clean house.

Nationals Open to Trade Talks, No Likely Buyers

The Washington Nationals have been a surprise at the deadline by not making one trade up to this point. Washington, who was thought to deal everyone before Friday's deadline, is having a heavy asking price.

Adam Dunn has little to no interest at this point. Josh Willingham, who has been swinging a hot bat, has drawn interest from a few clubs, yet the price is not worth it. Nick Johnson also looks to be staying put as well.

Giants Interest in Teahen, Most Likely Finished at Deadline

The San Francisco Giants have completed two trades that have brought in Ryan Garko and Freddy Sanchez. With that, the team has been reported as " finished" for this year's deadline. However, there has been recent interest in Royals hitter Mark Teahen, which could last until late in the afternoon.

Be sure to follow the rumor-line all around baseball as we near this year's trading deadline. The blog will begin updates around 1.30 PM ET, and shall last through the 4 PM trading deadline. Good Luck to all teams, and happy trading!
