The Athletics Week 15 Review

As the trade deadline draws to an end, it’s time to reflect upon the moves they made or not. The A’s are no different.

They sent Matt Holliday to the Saint Louis Cardinals for three Minor League players: third baseman Brett Wallace, right handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen, and outfielder Shane Peterson. Wallace may be the heir to Eric Chavez’s throne at third, but it’s a bit too early to tell.

Mortensen takes the place of Holliday on the 40 man roster. He most likely will be called up in September if not sooner. I’m not sure he is ready, but he might be. 

I am curious why they called up Eric Patterson and not Travis Buck? They only have three good outfielders, not counting Jack Cust. Patterson may be able to play in the outfield. It’s just puzzling.

Injuries are still tearing the team, as Daric Barton was placed on the 15 day Disabled List with a strained left hamstring. His replacement? Tommy Everidge.

What is a bad decision to call him up? I don’t know. I hope they play him with care. I don’t want him to lose the possibility to be next year's Rookie of the Year.

The offense has been heating up lately, unfortunately it’s a little too late to help.

Picking up Scott Hairston is definitely a plus. Giving up Sean Gallagher is a ok since they A’s acquired Mortensen.

To me, I am not seeing Billy Beane planning for the present, but for the future.

Why is this good? This year is a waste, standings wise. Beane realized too late that the A’s Minor League farm system was devoid of talent.

What does he do? He starts from scratch. Yes, he gave the Colorado Rockies some good players for Holliday, but he got some prospects from the Cardinals.

Look, granted the A’s started this season the wrong foot, but I have faith that the A’s will return to glory within the next couple years.
