Inclement Weather Threatens Bills-Jets Clash

Potentially record-breaking snowfall in Buffalo may wind up affecting the AFC playoff race. According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL is considering moving Sunday's game between the Bills and New York Jets to an undetermined time:

The game is currently scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Buffalo has been inundated with massive snowfall over the past few days, with more than five feet already on the ground, per Doyle Rice of USA Today. The weather forecast calls for up to three more feet between Thursday and Friday, which could make an already difficult cleaning job even more strenuous.

The Bills are currently offering fans $10 per hour and game tickets to help shovel snow at Ralph Wilson Stadium and surrounding areas.

“It's a tough, tough situation. I've never been a part of this, even being a New York state native,” Bills head coach Doug Marrone told reporters. “It's very difficult to put in words exactly what is going on. It's just a very, very difficult and challenging situation, not just for our organization and our football team, but for the region.”

According to the Sports Xchange (via the Chicago Tribune), "The Bills estimate that they will need to clear 220,000 tons of snow in order to clear the stadium for Sunday's game."

The Bills and NFL will not only want Ralph Wilson Stadium inhabitable for players and fans but will also be monitoring transportation in the Buffalo area. The NFL says it's currently waiting to see how the weather plays out before making a decision.

“We are working with the Bills to determine the status of the stadium,” a league spokesman told Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News. “If a change to the schedule needs to be made, the league will make the decision, working closely with the club and local authorities.”

The Bills, who are 5-5 after last week's loss to the Miami Dolphins, still have an outside shot at an AFC wild-card berth. While the Jets' season is largely over at 2-8, any delays could put both teams at a competitive disadvantage.

Buffalo is scheduled to host the Cleveland Browns next week, a game that may make or break both teams' wild-card chances.
