Players Aren't The Only Frauds In Steroid Era

WesJul 30, 2009

Every time a name is released from the list of 104 players who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) I immediately think of one word: Fraud.

David Ortiz can now officially be labeled one after his name was released Thursday afternoon. Manny Ramirez already proudly held the title after he got busted earlier this year for using a female fertility drug, human chorionic gonadotropin.

But the best part is they are not the only frauds in this entire situation...The biggest fraud of them all may be baseball fans.

Yes, I am talking about you.

Odds are, the person reading this article is a fraud amongst frauds.

Don't get too defensive about it. You never knew you were being a hypocrite. Fortunately there is something you can do about. I doubt you will, but the opportunity is there.

Hear me out for a little bit.

A-Rod saw his name released and he stepped up to the podium and gave terrible excuses. No one believed what he said, and honestly no one cared. We saw he used PEDs and that was all we needed to know.

Red Sox fans got the biggest kick out of this since the best player on their most hated rival failed a drug test. They got a nice little chant going for A-Rod in an at-bat in Fenway. The fans chanted, "You do steroids" repeatedly.

Make sure you keep the chant going for Ortiz when he steps to the plate. And if you don't, consider yourself a fraud. If you're going to rip into A-Rod for his steroid use and act righteous about the situation, then you better be critical of your own players.

You better have something inside you that says, "This guy cheated me as a fan, and I'm not going to support him anymore."

I'm sure Red Sox nation will stand behind their man and come up with some lame excuse like, "Well everyone else was doing it." You would think fans that are so witty and quick to come up with new chants could come up with something better.

I doubt they will.

I'm sure when Ramirez tested positive for PEDs earlier in the year Boston fans shrugged their shoulders and pointed out he was no longer on the team so why should they care.

Well now that one of your own is guilty I can't wait to see how you react.

Actually, I know exactly what will happen. You will stand up and cheer.

I know because I’ve seen it before.

Remember when Barry Bonds was linked to steroid use?

Oh, those were the days. The guy was booed mercilessly in every ball park. And when he went into Dodger Stadium? Forget about it. He had no chance. It was the dream situation for Dodgers fan.

The best player on their most hated rival saw his name linked to PEDs.

But as soon as their boy Manny got caught they could care less about PEDs. Ah, so what? They used the same cop-out, "What's the big deal? Everyone else is doing it."

And even look at the guy in the picture above. He is an Angels fan taunting Ortiz. I'm sure Angels fans had some choice words for Ortiz and joked about him using PEDs without having any proof at the time.

How ironic is that considering Gary Matthews Jr., their once star centerfielder, was linked to an HGH/Steroid ring.

It blows your mind how hypocritical baseball fans are.

I have to admit I am a Phillies fan. And if Ryan Howard or any one on the team tested positive for a PED I would boo them and want them gone immediately.

How can you support someone who mocks the very game we all enjoy? This is America's Pastime we're talking about it. You can't root for someone who not only cheated you, but cheated the game.

They cheated everyone who came before them. And everyone that comes after them will be interrogated because of their poor decisions.

Some of baseball's biggest stars are proving to be frauds. All we can do as fans is to not follow in their footsteps of hypocrisy.
