Jason Avant to Chiefs: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappNov 21, 2014

Jason Avant probably won't be questioning the play-calling with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The veteran receiver was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this season, shortly after he questioned the play-calling late in a Week 11 loss, but has resurfaced with Kansas City, signing a new contract to finish out the season with the team.

The Chiefs announced the signing:

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun first reported the news:

Avant's agent Doug Hendrickson added his thoughts:

Avant, 31, never made much of an impact in his time with the Panthers, catching 21 passes for 201 yards and a score. Though he was signed in the offseason to bolster the receiving corps and provide leadership, it's clear he didn't really do the former in Carolina.

His lack of production in the passing game was probably the primary reason he was cut, but it couldn't have helped that after a Week 11 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, he questioned the team's play-calling at the end of the game after the Panthers ran the ball three times late in the game and settled for a 46-yard field goal attempt that Graham Gano missed.

While head coach Ron Rivera claimed those comments had nothing to do with Avant's release, the team couldn't have been pleased that a player supposed to have a leadership role publicly questioned the coach's decision.

On the other hand, Avant was nothing but classy after the release and Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer didn't feel like his comments doomed him in Carolina:

Avant doesn't bring much speed or explosiveness to the wideout position, but he's made a career off of his excellent hands and willingness to go across the middle and make tough catches. He spent his first eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, finishing with 297 receptions for 3,646 yards and 12 touchdowns in his time there.

So Kansas City is getting a veteran leader who will do the little things to help a team win. Provided he doesn't publicly question any play calls, Avant should prove to be a nice addition to the organization.
