Breaking News: Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz Tested Positive in 2003

Chris MurphyJul 30, 2009

According to ESPN, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003.  Lawyers with knowledge of the results told the New York Times.

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were massive parts of the Red Sox World Series in 2004 and 2007.

If this turns out to be true, the Boston Red Sox owe people two World Series rings and trophies.

I hate to say I told you so, but...I totally did in this article.

It's all in the numbers:

David Ortiz 2002 - .272 BA, 20 HR, 75 RBI, 52 R, .339 OBP, 125 games
David Ortiz 2003 - .288 BA, 31 HR, 101 RBI, 79 R, .369, 128 games
David Ortiz 2004 - .301 BA, 41 HR, 139 RBI, 94 R, .380, 150 games (Red Sox World Series)

Manny is still one of the few juiced players that was impossible to tell by the numbers due to the fact he had steadily the same numbers every year and no real giant hop nor real giant decline.

2004 Playoffs/World Series

David Ortiz - 22/55 (.400 BA), 5 HR, 19 RBI, 13 R, 14 games
Manny Ramirez - 21/60 (.350 BA), 2 HR, 11 RBI, eight R, 14 games

Ramirez/Ortiz - Responsible for 51 runs scored
Red Sox team as a whole scored 90 runs.

2007 Playoffs/World Series

David Ortiz - 17/46 (.369 BA), 3 HR, 10 RBI, 16 R, 14 games
Manny Ramirez - 16/46 (.347 BA), 4 HR, 16 RBI, 11 R, 14 games

Ramirez/Ortiz - Responsible for 53 runs
Red Sox team as a whole scored 99 runs.

In February, Ortiz said players should be banned for a year if found with steroids or performance enhancing drugs.

Stay tuned to see how ESPN spins this in a way flattering toward the Red Sox organization and Big Papi/Mr. Clutch.  Ramirez will likely be ripped as he has since leaving the Red Sox.

Also, be on the look out for Steve Berthiuame, Peter Gammons, and Bill Simmons as they will be on suicide watch.
