UConn vs. Stanford: Score and Twitter Reaction for Cardinal's Upset Win

Tim KeeneyNov 17, 2014

This won't be another undefeated season for the Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team.

In an early-season battle of powerhouses, No. 6 Stanford got 24 points from Lili Thompson and some clutch late shooting from Amber Orrange to put an end to the Huskies' 47-game winning streak with an 88-86 overtime victory at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer summed up the thrilling nature of the contest, via ESPN's David Lombardi:

As ESPN Stats & Info noted, the Cardinal, who also ended UConn's 90-game winning streak in 2010, are becoming quite the archrival to head coach Geno Auriemma's squad:

Orrange was red-hot from the field down the stretch. The senior guard keyed Stanford's late comeback, scoring seven points in the final 30 seconds of regulation, including a game-tying three with just seconds left.

Pac-12 Networks' Twitter feed provided a look at the clutch play:

Ashley Adamson, a studio host for the Pac-12 Network, praised Orrange's heroics down the stretch:

She wasn't done. Orrange also knocked down a key jumper in overtime, putting the Cardinal ahead by one with 1:41 remaining. It was a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as the Huskies couldn't get a shot off in the final seconds.

Auriemma and VanDerveer came away from the game in very different lights, as Yahoo Sports' Jeff Eisenberg and ESPN's Holly Rowe noted:

Fortunately for the Huskies, who weren't great down the stretch, it's still November. They still have Breanna Stewart, the reigning national player of the year who had 23 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. And they still have one of the most talented rosters in America.

But it's clear Stanford is ready to put an end to the lady Huskies' run of back-to-back national titles. Making up one of the best rivalries in the sport, these two teams are on a crash course to meet again in March.
