DX for Mets is All Wrong

Bronte ErwinJul 29, 2009

The perception that mismanagement has destroyed the Mets season is ridiculous.

The Mets' medical staff has been harangued because they mis-diagnosed player’s injuries. But with the exception of Carolos Delgado and J.J. Putz who required surgery, the mis-diagnosis was little more than a belated placement on the DL for players.

Injuries are not an exact science; return time tables are guesses. If I was GM I would say “Beltran is day-today” too and hope the best center fielder in the baseball comes back tomorrow.  The problem with the Mets injuries are injures, and exposing their weak farm system. Their best players got hurt and they had no players in the farm system to promote or trade. This is the reason VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard had to go.

New York called for Bernazard’s head when it was learned he had a shirtless clubhouse tirade with his AA team. Being shirtless is not what should have gotten Bernazard fired. His performance over his tenure merited his dismissal.

Bernazard should rip his shirt off. His minor league system stinks. Having failed to develop any players he had to know Omar Minaya would be looking to Bernazard for answers at the end of the season. So he did what any poor manager would do, he blew a gasket trying to light a fire under his players.

Getting rid of Bernazard may have saved Omar and Jerry Manual’s job. Or it may not have.

By berating beat reporter Adam Rubin Omar looks like he has lost control of a team that has been questioned for its lack of leadership.  Finishing the season as a listless squad with no help on the way from trade or farm might spell the end for Minaya.

But injuries, poor management and inept doctors are not what is killing the Mets. They are simply beat up. On most nights David Wright and Luis Castillo are the only starters from opening day. What the Mets need is to get a healthy, keep pitching, and get to seven games back in September. They know that diagnosis is enough to for a healthy October.
