Tomas Kaberle Skating with New York Rangers, Eyeing a Return to the NHL

Sean TierneyNov 4, 2014

Tomas Kaberle, now 36 years old, just won't quit.

After failing in an attempt to earn a contract with the New Jersey Devils during the preseason, Kaberle may stand to benefit from the New York Rangers' misfortune.

The injuries continue to mount on the Rangers blue line. Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh has a separated shoulder, Dan Boyle has a broken hand, and Kevin Klein is suffering with a bruised foot, as per Steve Zipay of Newsday. John Moore has also been banished with a five-game suspension.

Cue the need for a veteran blueliner to step in.

On Tuesday, Rangers general manager Glen Sather invited Kaberle to informally join the Rangers' team practices. As per TSN.ca's Pierre LeBrun:

At this stage of his career, Kaberle isn't likely to command much of a salary as he looks to find a team to latch on to for another NHL season. That's good news for the Rangers, who only have a little under $1.2 million in cap space to spend, as per Capgeek.

Though Kaberle's history of offensive production (563 points in 984 games) cannot be counted on at this stage of his career, Kaberle has maintained a career Corsi percentage of 50.5. This is particularly impressive considering some lean years spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

For the Rangers, this is a low-cost look at a veteran skater. Kaberle's offensive experience and strong history of puck possession may help to stabilize the depleted Rangers blue line at a discounted cost, if the club decides to sign him.

What do you think, Rangers fans? Does Tomas Kaberle have something left to offer at the NHL level, or is this purely a desperation move by GM Glen Sather?
