MLB Baseball Weekend Quick Picks: July 25th 2009

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First-pitch: 1:07 pm est.
Tampa Bay – David Price vs. Toronto – Brett Cecil
Analysis: Brett Cecil has a 3 and 1 record but gamblers wouldn’t know it by looking at his 4.67 ERA and 1.67 WHIP.

David Price is 3 and 4 with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. When both teams start pitchers with somewhat equal stats, gamblers should go with the team with the better bats because the odds figure to be fair. That’s what I’ll be doing in betting on Toronto to win straight up.

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
First-pitch: 7:10 pm est.
Baltimore – Jeremy Guthrie vs. Boston – Jon Lester

Analysis: Guthrie really shouldn’t have any shot in this game as his ERA of 5.12 and WHIP of 1.36 is much worse than Lester.

Lester brings an ERA of 3.87 and a WHIP of 1.29 into this. Lester is also awesome at home and the Red Sox got beat up by the Texas Rangers earlier this week. They will be looking to get back on the winning track.

The key will be the odds and since I believe Boston will be too big of a favorite on the MLB money line, I’m going to bet Jon Lester on the run line.

Pick: Boston Red Sox – Jon Lester on the run line

Florida Marlins vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
First-pitch: 4:10 pm est.
Florida – Chris Volstad vs. Los Angeles – Jason Schmidt

Analysis: The Dodgers are playing exceptionally well but Schmidt was just okay in his first start of the year. He won, but he struck out only two batters and racked up a 5.40 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.

Chris Volstad’s 4..33 ERA and 1.22 WHIP are much better, but the Dodgers have just been playing very, very well lately.

Still, with Schmidt on the mound, I have to take a long look at the underdog in this game. I believe that Schmidt will put the Dodgers into a hole and Volstad will keep things under control until the late innings.

I’m betting Florida to win.

Pick: Florida Marlins

Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
First-pitch: 8:05 pm est.
Chicago – Clayton Richard vs. Detroit – Rick Porcello

Analysis: Detroit sends one of their young pitchers to the mound in Rick Porcello. Porcello has a winning record of 9 and 6 and his ERA of 4.40 really isn’t terrible. His 1.49 WHIP could use some work but he’s home for this game.

Clayton Richard’s stats aren’t close to being better with a 5.00 ERA, a 3 and 3 record, and a1.53 WHIP.

So, Detroit will be big favorites, but Chicago has been the hot team. What to do? Ride Porcello’s arm on the run line.
