7/23/09 A's Vs Yankees

Cj ReoJul 23, 2009

Today was meant to be an off day for both Oakland and the Yankees but due to an April rain out there was baseball scheduled at the launch pad.

Just like the game that was supposed to be played in April, this game was delayed by rain... today's delay spanned two yankeeographys and half a centerstage (programs on yes that lasted 2:30)

The starters were Oakland rookie Vin Mazzaro (2-6) and Yankee ace CC Sabathia (9-6)

The game began with the A's striking hard and fast vs CC, and the rookie from Jersey was dealing...after 3 1/2 innings the A's lead 3-0

But that all changed when bottom 4 Mark Teixeira belted a 2 run home run to deep right to make the score 3-2 OAK and by the time the end of the inning had come, Mazzaro had thrown 40 more pitches and the Yankees had a 4-3 lead

The Yankees tacked on two more runs in the next inning thanks to RBI's from Jorge Posada and Eric Hinske and after five innings Mazzaro was out and the Yankees had a 6-3 lead

Sabathia pitched 7 innings and only gave up the three runs on 109 pitches and Phil Hughes got a 6 out save, the first save of his career and the Yankees defeated the A's by the score of 6-3

With the win, New York now takes a 2.5 game lead over idle Boston in the east, and with the loss, Oakland falls into a deeper abyss last place in the AL West

Final Line scores were: OAK: 3R,9H,0E and NYY: 6R,10H,0E

CJ's MVP: Mark Teixeira (NYY) 2-4 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R

The teams play game 2 of the 4 game set tomorrow at 7:05 ET
