There is never a good time for injuries, but they are especially difficult to deal with during the preseason since the games do not even count toward the standings.
The Dallas Mavericks and Raymond Felton found that out the hard way Friday, as Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com and Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com noted:
MacMahon reported the results of Felton's X-rays:
The injury occurred in the first quarter of the Mavericks' preseason contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was just a freak accident, but Dallas signed Felton in the offseason and is clearly hoping he can contribute as part of the point guard rotation.
On Oct. 1, Snead provided a statement from Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle discussing the team's point-guard rotation for the upcoming season:
"We’ve got three or four guys that we really like. I see Jameer, Ray Felton and Devin Harris all playing both guard positions. With the way our roster is set up, we like attackers and we like guys that can make plays both with and without the ball. You know, people look at it and I get a lot of questions about the minutes crunch, but I’m not worried about it. I just want good basketball players that want to win, and I think we have that.
"
Felton averaged 9.7 points and 5.6 assists last season for the New York Knicks, but he only played in 65 games. In fact, Felton has not played in 80 games in a single season since 2009-10 when he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets (then the Bobcats), so durability could be a concern this season.
It certainly was Friday night.
