Garnett Has Settled into Role as Timberwolves Mentor
Garnett is clearly no longer the force at both ends of the court that he was during his peak seasons. That said, he's provided a stabilizing veteran influence in Minnesota as the team goes through a rebuild centering around the likes of Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.
This season, Garnett is averaging 3.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.6 minutes.
The 39-year-old forward was a model of consistency and durability during his early years in the league. All of the mileage he put on his body during those years, which included 15 All-Star appearances and an NBA title in 2008, have taken a toll as he's battled various ailments in recent years.
Should the latest issue force him to miss time, the Wolves will probably spread his limited minutes around to several different players. Nemanja Bjelica and Gorgui Dieng could all see a slight uptick in usage alongside Towns in the frontcourt.
Even though Garnett is in the twilight of his career, he still provides value to the team that drafted him with the fifth overall pick two decades ago. He'll slide back into a complementary role once healthy.
