Giants Clinch 2014 NLCS Berth: Highlights and Twitter Reaction to Celebration

The San Francisco Giants took one step closer to a potential third World Series title in five years after beating the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night to advance to the National League Championship Series.

San Francisco won the National League Division Series over the Nationals in four games.

The Giants scored their first run of the game after Gregor Blanco walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning. They doubled the lead on a fielder's choice by Joe Panik.

Bryce Harper made it interesting, doubling home Washington's first run in the top of the fifth and tying the game with a solo home run in the seventh. However, Panik scored in the bottom half of the inning after a wild pitch by Aaron Barrett.

The Giants will meet the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in four games. San Francisco and St. Louis met in the 2012 NLCS, with the Giants winning in seven games. The two franchises have alternated the National League crown over the last four years.

The historical trend favors the Giants, but with the way that this year's postseason has unfolded, trends and statistics get thrown out the window.

Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, with the first pitch at 8 p.m. ET.
