Cavaliers Media Day 2014: Top Comments and Highlights

Timothy RappSep 26, 2014

No other team in the NBA had a summer quite like the Cleveland Cavaliers.

They landed the first pick in the draft. Then, LeBron James decided to come home to Ohio and sign with the team. They turned that first pick into exciting prospect Andrew Wiggins before promptly dealing him in a package to land superstar Kevin Love, which formed a new Big Three consisting of James, Love and Kyrie Irving.

It was a whirlwind for sure, and on Friday several members of the organization tried to put into context the entire ordeal and the plans moving forward at the team's media day.

James took to the stage on Friday, looking trimmed down and a bit more business-like than excited. James was serious about the task at hand and admitted it is going to be tough, per Tom Withers of The Associated Press:

With all of the hype this summer, James is smart enough to know that championships aren't won on media day. That mentality was perhaps best summed up in the following tweet by Bill Reiter of Fox Sports:

James is clearly taking his role as the team's leader seriously, per Zac Jackson of Fox Sports Ohio:

He also spoke about what he was leaving behind, namely a friendship with Dwyane Wade, according to Ethan J. Skolnick of Bleacher Report:

James did manage to crack a smile when speaking about his kids and their role in the decision. SportsCenter on Twitter has more:

Per Jackson, his kids asked about one player in particular:

Fox Sports shared video of James talking about his children on YouTube:

Prior to James speaking, new head coach David Blatt and general manager David Griffin were the first to take the stage, and it didn't take Blatt long to get a laugh with the following quote, via Michael Lee of The Washington Post:

It's hard to blame him there. After all, Blatt gets to lead the NBA's newest Big Three. He spoke about working with James, per John Telich of Fox 8 News:

But he also talked about the team being more than the big names that make it up, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles:

Griffin brought up the expectations of the Cavs going forward, per WKYC Sports on Twitter:

Finally, each touched on how much easier James has made his respective job, per McMenamin:

Irving also took to the podium himself to address his new teammates. Here's that moment, via the Cavaliers' official Twitter account:

Irving is aware his role might be changing with LeBron capable of handling the ball, and he's willing to do what is necessary to win, per WKYC Sports:

Finally, Love took to the podium, the last of the Big Three to do so. He didn't hesitate to talk about what it was like waiting for the trade between the Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves to go through, per Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:

And while things have been easy like Sunday morning for Love since the trade became official, he knows the intensity will be ramping up soon, per McMenamin:

One thing is for certain: The folks in Cleveland are very excited to watch this team take the court, and expectations are high. With James, Love and Irving leading the way, championship aspirations are hardly unrealistic.

It's a new day in Cleveland. Media day provided the first taste, but the real fun will begin once fans see these guys finally performing on the court together. Whether they can live up to the hype or not will be one of the biggest storylines of the season.
