Russell Wilson, Percy Harvin's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 3

Chris RolingSep 21, 2014

In a Super Bowl rematch, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson reinforced the notion that he is a No. 1 fantasy quarterback, while top receiver Percy Harvin floundered under the pressure.

Harvin hurt a lot of owners against Denver, as his team-high nine targets did not translate to noteworthy production:

For Wilson, his output—a 24-of-34 line for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns against one interception—display noteworthy fantasy frequency, as his numbers this season show:

The good news keeps on rolling for Wilson, too. After a Week 4 bye, he gets to face Washington and Dallas. While the two rank well against opposing quarterbacks, the numbers are deceptive—both have played miserable quarterbacks, with Washington beating up on Houston and Jacksonville, and Dallas taking advantage of Tennessee.

The case for Harvin as a matchup-proof option is more complicated. Thanks to his involvement as a runner, he scored eight or more points in his first two games before Sunday's collapse.

But Harvin was more akin to a high-profile decoy against Denver than anything, perhaps because he was blanketed by Aqib Talib. This suggests that he is still a solid No. 2 fantasy receiver, but he might be best utilized on a case-by-case basis.

It was a maddening night for owners, as is often the case when Skip Bayless is the voice of reason on the matter:

It is difficult to sit a player such as Harvin if owners drafted him as a starter, but so it goes in the realm of fake football. Risk-reward is a give and take.

Regardless, owners who took the dive on Wilson, and to a lesser extent Harvin, are reaping the benefits of the gamble on players stuck in a run-first attack.

Wilson is eerily consistent at a predictable position for the first time in his career. Harvin, as always, is a high-upside player who will burn owners every now and then.
