Bucholtz's Great Pitching, Youkilis's 17th Homer Doom Jays!

robert meyerJul 18, 2009

The Red Sox were coming into tonight's game in 1st place in the Al east division! They have a 3 game lead over the 2nd place team, the New York Yankees. Clay Bucholtz was called up from triple AAA Pawtucket to make his first Major league start of the season. Bucholtz has been dominant in triple AAA this season. He is 7-2 this season with AAA-Pawtucket. Bucholtz would face the rookie pitcher from the Toronto Blue Jays, Ricky Romero. Romero has been great this year. He is 7-3 coming into tonight's game.

Ricky Romero ran into trouble in the top of the first inning. Romero walked the lead-off man to start the game. Two batters later with one on base, Romero tried to get ahead with a fastball against Kevin Youkilis, but Youkilis took advantage and blasted it outta here for his 17th homer this season giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. Bucholtz was pitching great to start the game. He sent the Blue Jays down in order in the top of the first. Bucholtz would then cruise by the Jays, inning by inning. Besides the one earned run Bucholtz allowed in the 4th inning, he was pitching great. Romero was pitching better as well until the 5th inning. In the top of the 5th inning, Romero retired the first batter of the game, but then walked Pedroia and Youkilis. Romeo then gave up a RBI double to David Ortiz scoring Pedroia and Youkilis giving Boston a 4-1 lead. Camp relieved Romero in the 5th inning and retired the side without any more runs scoring.  Entering the 6th inning, Bucholtz had only allowd 3 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2 batters. After he retired the first two batters, he then allowed a base hit by Overbay and walked the next batter Alex Rios. Bard relieved Bucholtz in the 6th inning. Bard struck out Jose Bautista to retire the side. Entering the 9th inning, both bullpens hadn't allowed any more runs. Jonathan Paplebon came in for a save chance. Paplebon retired the Blue Jays in order in the 9th inning to end the game. The Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-1! Jonathan Paplebon got his 24th save of the season. Clay Bucholtz got his first Major league win fo the season. Unforunetly for Bucholtz, he was sent back down after the game back to triple AAA Pawtucket. The Red Sox only brought up to give their starters an extra day of rest. The Red Sox don't need Bucholtz, they already have 5 great starting pitchers. Bucholtz said after the game, I'm just thankful for the opportunity to be here and play with these guys again," he said. "The starting rotation they have here right now is pretty unbelievable."  Hopefully for Bucholtz, he will one day get into the starting rotation here a gain.
