BJ Ryan A Good Fit For Cubs

Bullpen BrianJul 15, 2009

I like the B.J. Ryan signing.

He’s a proven player with something to prove.

Best of all, the Cubs get him on the cheap.

If Ryan doesn’t work out, so what?

Reminds me a lot of the Jim Edmonds signing last May.

The Cubs needed a left-handed bat and Edmonds, wanting to prove he could still play, turned into a clutch roster move.

This year the Cubs need another southpaw in the bullpen. Maybe Ryan, still with something to prove, becomes the 2009 version of Edmonds?

The only downside to a serviceable Ryan is the Cubs getting the silly idea of returning Sean Marshall to the rotation.

I’ve said it all year, Marshall is best suited coming out of the pen, and the numbers show it.

Marshall leads the majors with a 95 percent success rate retiring inherited runners (22-for-23), including his last 14, and has also worked his way out of three bases loaded jams.

Hope for the best with Ryan and leave Marshall where he belongs, in the bullpen!
