Shakedown: The Blonde 'Stache (Contestant #2)
Welcome back to the Shakedown!
Disturbingly, an almost mustache-free Major League Baseball All-Star weekend has come and gone. Thank goodness the St. Louis Cardinals whose players have begun to sport a troupe of triumphant lip curtains. And of course, your American Mustache Institute was keeping it real by conducting its All-Star โStache Dash for which two lucky fans won free tickets to the Mid-Summer classic.
Last week we kicked off our latest โMonthly Mustache Shakedownโ with a look at the โBest Blond Mustache,โand our first outstanding candidate was former MLBer Cory Snyder.
This week we change sports and head to the hardwoods of my own passions (no, not midget juggling) in the National Basketball Association. And of course, you all know where Iโm going here โ there really is no debate โ ladies and gentlemen, I give you basketball Hall-of-Famer Larry Bird.
Bird, of course, is one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history, and Adam Morrison actually lines the insides of his pants with pictures of Bird.
But if you are too young to have seen him play, check out this montage piece when you have some time.
Bird, of course, was more that just a great player with a mustache fit for a Alabama share cropper. He also was a character, and surprisingly for a native of Indiana โ which does not believe in daylight savings nor GPAsย โย he was a quote machine. Hereโs a few solid ones:
- As far as playing, I didnโt care who guarded me - red, yellow, black. I just didnโt want a white guy guarding me, because itโs disrespect to my game.
- Leadership is diving for a loose ball, getting the crowd involved, getting other players involved. Itโs being able to take it as well as dish it out. Thatโs the only way youโre going to get respect from the players.
- I really donโt like talking about money. All I can say is that the Good Lord must have wanted me to have it.
So hereโs to Bird, our second offering in The Shakedownโs โBest Blond Mustacheโ contest. As always, we of course now ask for your suggestions on our final three candidates, as JSF is only as good as the quality of your semi-worthless suggestions.
Carry on.
Week One - Cory Snyder
Week Two - Larry Bird
Week Three - July 23
Week Four - July 30
