Federer Defeats Roddick in a Epic Slug Fest
5-7, 7-6(6), 7-6(5), 3-6, 16-14
Read that again. And blink. Keep on blinking.Roger Federer scraped through (no question there) and left behind a beaming Pete Sampras, and an absolutely heart broken Andy Roddick, to win his 6th Wimbledon title and finally stood all alone at the Grand Slam summit.
In one of the great matches of the Open Era, Federer survived, yes SURVIVED one of the great slug fests to have ever taken place on Centre Court.
Roddick broke Federer twice and lost his serve once; only once, and lost the match. Such are the caprices of sport.
It was a sight for the gods, and well, Ivo Karlovic can stay at home. These men served out an astounding 90+ serves, Federer leading by a few aces.
Roddick may forever regret losing that second set tie break, which he lead by 6-2. He lost it 8-6. That proved crucial as Federer won the next set to make it 2-1.
Roddick however broke Federer to win the fifth set 6-3.
That's when the match really began.
Ace after ace, nonreturnable serve one after the other flowed from either racket.
In the end, with Roddick serving at 14-15, he finally lost it, and with it the match. Federer jumped up in joy as the tennis gods smiled upon him. All the gods were there in the Royal Box: Borg, Laver, Sampras, watching as the Greater of Equals became the Greatest.
