WWE Main Event Results: Winners, Twitter Reaction and Analysis from July 1

The Doctor Chris MuellerJul 1, 2014

Welcome to Bleacher Report's recap of WWE Main Event. Here is where we take a look at what happened on the show, examining the winners, reactions to matches and any possible ramifications coming out of the program.

This week's show was scheduled to have a match that would rival anything we have seen lately, but due to the eye injury Cesaro suffered on Raw, it was turned into a six-man tag match.

WWE obviously had nothing else up their sleeve, so it ended up being a pretty mediocre week for WWE's C-show. Let's take a look at everything that went down on this week's episode of Main Event.

Opening Segment

The show opened with Cesaro and Paul Heyman in the ring talking about how Cesaro has an eye injury and cannot fight in his match against Dolph Ziggler.

Dolph Ziggler came out and talked a little trash until Reverend Big E came out to give another southern preacher-inspired promo. RybAxel and RVD joined the party, with every man claiming they would win the Intercontinental title at Battleground.

The only thing missing was Teddy Long coming out to make this into a six-man tag match. This segment certainly didn't make up for the lack of what would have been an amazing match between Cesaro and Ziggler, but it didn't drag on, and it gave us several new names for the Battle Royal at Battleground.

Grade: C+

Notes and Highlights

  • I love how RVD threw a jab in there about Ryback using the same designer for his ring gear.
  • Big E proved in NXT that he is better than what WWE is giving him to work with. I want to see his humor come out more in his mic work.
  • Cesaro looked like the classiest pirate ever with his new robe and eye patch.

Twitter Reaction:

Luke Harper and Erick Rowan vs. R-Truth and Xavier Woods

This was a pretty average tag match, but Xavier Woods had a brief run of offense that reminded me just how much this guy is capable of.

He may not be getting the chance to show off his skills like he did in NXT and TNA, but it's great to see him actually have a few moments of dominance.

As expected, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan picked up the win in less than five minutes.

Winners: Luke Harper and Erick Rowan

Grade: C

Notes and Highlights

  • I'm really tired of watching Woods and Truth job to other people. I was able to fill in the winner before the match even started just because it was so obvious Harper and Rowan would win.
  • The new music for Harper and Rowan really fits them well. Even if the Wyatt Family ends up parting ways eventually, I hope one of them keeps that song.
  • Rowan is not at the level of Harper, but he is getting better at doing all the little things between moves that make a match better. I could see him being a really good midcard heel when he goes out on his own.
  • Harper, on the other hand, has everything he needs to be a top star. He is actually the best in terms of wrestling skills in the Wyatt Family. Bray Wyatt is good, but Harper wrestles like he is 100 pounds lighter than he actually is.
  • WWE did not upload this match, so instead I included the Fourth of July edition of WWE Warehouse.

Twitter Reaction:

Alicia Fox and Nikki Bella vs. The Funkadactyls

This was going to be a handicap rematch from Raw, but Stephanie McMahon came on the big screen and told Nikki that she had a new partner for her in Alicia Fox.

Foxy seemed like she was all for it, but right as Nikki went for her first tag, Foxy pulled her hand away and kicked her in the face. Obviously, Stephanie is using Fox to do her dirty work, which was more literal than figurative when Foxy ended up in the mud pit last week.

The match was really short and did not give anyone a chance to do anything special.

Winners: The Funkadactyls

Grade: D

Notes and Highlights

  • Anyone who ever called Nikki Bella "Fat" needs to take a look at her six pack.
  • You would think Nikki's outfit was made before her surgery with the way she was literally popping out of her top.
  • I was expecting more drama between Cameron and Naomi after Cameron used some dirty tactics in this match.
  • I would be curious to see if Alicia Fox could use this craziness as a babyface. AJ worked pretty well as a face while acting nuts, but Foxy is a different kind of nuts.

Twitter Reaction:

RVD, Dolph Ziggler and Big E vs. RybAxel and Cesaro

This was a really fun six-man tag match that turned this week's show from bad to watchable. Not only did everyone have a chance to do some of their signature moves, but Dolph Ziggler picked up the win for his team with a clean pin over Cesaro.

With Cesaro being pushed, it was shocking not to see Ryback or Axel take the pin. Big E probably had the least amount of time in the ring, but it allowed Ziggler to shine.

Ziggler might not be on the verge of a huge push, but he has been winning a lot more lately, and that is a big step in the right direction toward him getting back to being booked the way he deserves.

Winner: RVD, Big E and Dolph Ziggler

Grade: B+

Notes and Highlights

  • Kind of a random thought; Have you ever noticed how the eye patch is one of the few things that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years? Even simple things like tables and chairs have been designed differently over the years, but nobody has improved upon the eye patch.
  • Either Ryback has gotten better at selling or he legitimately knocked the wind out of himself when he missed a top rope splash.
  • Ziggler ripping off the eye patch was funny, but Heyman's reaction to it was the best part.
