Andy Roddick's Battle Strategy Against Murray

Deep ChatterjeeJul 2, 2009

If Andy Roddick wants to beat Murray tomorrow, not only must he be hitting the ball well but he must have a strong strategy. Here is what I think he should do.

Don't put too much pace on the ball.

The serve is obviously excluded from the statement. Unless Roddick is going for an almost certain winner, putting too much pace on the ball is basically giving Murray access to every shot he knows.

Attack the Murray second serve.

By that, I mean hit a shot with a lot of action on it and as well as a lot of depth to push Murray behind the baseline. That was Murray loses a lot of angle and variety, giving Roddick an advantage in the point.

Try the inviting slice.

Especially when Roddick pins Murray down behind the baseline, he should try a short slice. Murray will have to run a bit to get to it, and then he will have no choice but to come up to net. That would be an advantage to Roddick.

Serve big and with variety.

Keep Murray honest and sometimes just throw in a 115 mph first serve right at Murray to throw his timing off. When Roddick goes for the Ace down the tee, go for 140 mph.

Go forehand to forehand in rallies.

Roddick's forehand is equally as good as Murray's. That can not be said about the backhands. When Murray goes to the back, go crosscourt and then immediately down the line. His backhand down the line was effective against Hewitt and should be effective vs. Murray, too.

What do you guys think?
