Comments From Radio and TV Sportscasters: Facts or Opinions?

Jon ChonarJul 2, 2009

Today I would like to explore the "world of sportscasters," radio and TV  who attempt "to feed us" with information that is difficult to determine if it is "fact" or their opinions.

Example #1:  "t doesn't matter if you fire the manager because the team is not winning".  Okay, first how many examples must be given before you prove what they said is wrong? One? Three? Six?

For starters, the Colorado Rockies were going nowhere and doing nothing.  What happens?  They fire the manager, bring in someone else and they start to win.  The previous manager is replaced by Jim Tracey and what happens after the change you ask me? Well, the Rockies win 11 in a row and 20 out of 24.  Hm-mm, guess changing the manager wasn't the answer huh?

Remember this is not fantasy or here say.  It is facts!  What are you going to call it, luck? I know it is only one incident, however, like I said before in challenging these sportscasters as to what they are saying that it will not turn a team around I would like to know now what their comment would be?  How many examples are needed to justify my observation?

Example #2: "if Soriano isn't the lead off man, then who are you going to put in his place"?  Okay, if you look at Soriano's stats as a leadoff man he ranks 26th out of 30 as a lead off man.  He ranks 18 out of 30 in hits, 27 out of 30 in BA, 27 out of 30 in On Base Percentage, 14 out of 30 in walks.

I don't believe because someone "hits home runs leading off" has the right to bat lead off.  And "just because" he wants to, not to help the team win. Don't you think a "complete baseball player" is one who will do anything unselfishly to help the team win games?

I know there will be those of you out there who don't agree with me, but "facts" do not lie!  Here is a "simple question" similar to the situations above."

If you hit your hand with a hammer and it hurts.  Would you do it again?  I welcome your rebuttals, comments, and opinions.  Thank you.
