The Revolutionary War All Over Again
On July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared its independence from Great Britain. Here, 223 years later, it has come to this.
Andy Murray and Andy Roddick will meet at Centre Court to see who has the right to play in the Wimbledon Final. This nubile tennis fan is having such a tough time deciding who to root for in this battle of Andys.
I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but now that it has, I have to make a decision. Do I root for my fellow countryman? Or do I root for my new favorite tennis player and his terrific story?
I have always considered myself a patriotic man. I support the USA national teams in every event they play in. I even followed the World Baseball Classic very closely. From soccer to rugby to baseball, I always love to watch USA's best in action.
However, Wimbledon is not an international tournament. It does not pit country vs. country, which is why I am rooting for Mr. Murray.
While I have always been a patriotic person. I also am a sucker for a story. And Murray's story is one of the best in sports.
If Murray defeats Roddick, the entire United Kingdom will drop everything and stop whatever they are doing to watch Murray take on the winner of Roger Federer vs. Tommy Haas. Murray has the chance to send the UK into sheer ecstasy.
Not only will the whole country be watching, but Queen Elizabeth part deux will be in attendance. Will Murray be able to give the Brits and their Queen what they want? We will have to wait and see.
Murray has the chance to become Great Britain's first Wimbledon Champion since 1936. When he and Andy Roddick face off on Friday, I will be cheering for Mr. Murray. And if Murray loses, well then, go America!
