Diamondbacks 6, Reds 2: I Just Don't Understand

Russell WightJul 1, 2009

"You can't play everybody," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "You don't have a good team unless you have too many good bodies."

Fair enough.

Jonny Gomes is hitting .360 with 4 home runs and 11 RBI in his last 18 games. Chris Dickerson is hitting .277 for the season and .452 in his last 12 games. Ryan Hanigan has been consistent all year when given a chance to play and has maintained a .321 batting average.

So, what is the problem? NONE OF THESE GUYS WERE IN THE STARTING LINEUP ON TUESDAY NIGHT! I believe the correct internet lingo is...WTF?

I just don't understand.

Laynce Nix usually starts in left field against right-handed pitchers while Gomes faces lefties. That's fine. I thought Hanigan would get the start simply because Bronson Arroyo seems to like throwing to him. Nope. I have absolutely no idea why Willy Taveras started in center over Dickerson.

Dan Haren started for the Diamondbacks and did not allow a baserunner until Joey Votto walked in the fourth inning. The Reds were hitless until Jay Bruce singled in the fifth. Haren (7-5) struck out seven in the first four innings. He was also 2-for-2 and hit his first home run of the season.

Arroyo (8-7) gave up 10 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out only two. Despite discussing offseason carpal tunnel surgery on his right hand just two days ago, Arroyo would not make any excuses for his poor outing.

With the 6-2 loss, Cincinnati finishes the month of June with an 11-15 record. They will try to even the series and start July with a victory tonight. It will be Jon Garland (4-7, 5.04) against Johnny Cueto (7-4, 2.86).
