Germany Batter England in the U21 Euro Championship Final

England 0 - Germany 4 (European U21 Championship Final, June 29, 2009) Gonzalo Castro poked Germany into the lead following a brilliant through ball from the imperious Mesut Ozil.

The Werder Bremen midfielder then got his name on the scoresheet at the start of the second half as a speculative 35-yard Mesut Ozil free-kick deceived Scott Loach between the sticks to squirm its way into the net.

The final nail in England’s coffin arrived 12 minutes from time as a counter-attack was finished when Sandro Wagner slipped the ball between Loach’s legs. To add insult to injury, Sandro Wagner then claimed an 84th minute double with a splendid curler into the far corner to rub the Young Lions faces in their defeat.

Italy 3 - Greece 1 (U20 Mediterranean Games, June 29, 2009) Sampdoria striker Mattia Mustacchio fired Italy into the lead after 28 minutes only for Pavlis to deflect a Greek shot over the goalie for a lucky equaliser. The young Italians won the match after the break, first Mattia Mustacchio restored the advantage before a wonderfully languid goal from Catania’s Fabio Sciacca put the icing on the cake.

Stabaek 2 - Brann 1 (Tippeligaen, June 29, 2009) Erik Huseklepp put Brann ahead after 25 minutes, but goals from Christian Keller and Pontus Farnerud in either half turned the match in the hosts’ favour.

Rovaniemi PS 1 - Honka 2 (Veikkausliiga, June 28, 2009) After Chanda Mwaba fired RoSP in fron in the 51st minute, Honka snapped victory from the jaws of defeat with two last minute goals from Jussi Vasara and Hermanni Vuorinen.
