Fantasy Analysis of Mark DeRosa for Chris Perez Trade

Eric StashinJun 28, 2009

According to Matthew Leach of mlb.com (click here for the article), the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired Mark DeRosa in exchange for RP Chris Perez and a player to be named later.

DeRosa is expected to play third base for the Cardinals, until Troy Glaus returns from shoulder surgery (though that is a major if at this point).  If that happens, he can then shift to either 2B or the outfield, perhaps.  It’s that versatility that had appealed to many teams.

Where the deal leaves Khalil Greene is unknown.  He had shifted to 3B from SS, but obviously he’s about to be displaced.  Brendan Ryan has been playing well at SS, hitting .308, though with little to no power or speed.  He’s likely to hold onto his job, but doesn’t have much fantasy appeal.

DeRosa fantasy value is unchanged by this move.  He was hitting .270 with 13 HR, 50 RBI and 47 R at the time of the trade.  He certainly helps to add some depth to a Cardinals line-up which has not gotten as much from Ryan Ludwick & Rick Ankiel as expected.

Perez was thought to be the closer of the future for the Cardinals at one time, but Ryan Franklin has claimed that job this season and has not shown any signs of relinquishing it.

He was definitely expendable and adds depth to the Indians bullpen.  He could step right into a vital role in setting up for Kerry Wood and get a few vulture saves, so he is worth watching.

This move likely regulates Jhonny Peralta to 3B for the rest of the season, with Luis Valbuena now the permanent SS.  Valbuena is better with the glove than the bat, however.

His minor league career high in HR was just 12 HR and 22 SB, with a career average of just .272.  He’s gotten off to a slow start this season, hitting .208 in 125 AB.  He’s a low-end option, at best, and is better left for the waiver wire.

What do you think about the trade?  Which team got the better of it?  Which player do you see having the biggest fantasy fallout from it?
