Has Cubs Vs. Sox Lost It's Spark

Michael GibbonsJun 26, 2009

Remember when these games meant nothing. These used to be just a game played during the All-Star Break. They would call up some guys from the minors and it would be a little preview of the future. But then Bud Selig came in and decided across the land to have everyone play these games and make them count.

Don't get me wrong I like inter-league play it is fun to see every team in MLB come through town at least once every couple of years. It does give us great matchups like Cubs/Sox, Yankees/Mets, Royals/Cards but it also gives us games like The Rays vs. Marlins and Nationals vs Baltimore. This is where I think series like Cubs/Sox might be losing part of its spark, because it isn't that special anymore.

But besides that there is something else, there just isn't that same feeling in the air this year. Maybe it has something to do with both teams hovering around 500, but we have had years like that before. Maybe it is just such a let down from last year when both teams were doing so well when they met and split the series. Or maybe it's the hangover from the Bulls and Blackhawks playoff runs and the excitement over the Bears having a pro bowl QB. Or could it be the work of Jerry Reinsdorf?

It is no secert that Jerry is buddy buddy with Bud Selig. Supposely Selig's first choice to buy the Cubs is a friend of Jerry's. So you have to wonder maybe Jerry was whisphering into Bud's ear about how maybe next year we could play in Wrigley during the week, after all it will sell out every night, you could put it on national TV and get great rating and then we can play during the weekend when they come to the Cell.

This is just me thinking aloud really and was inspired about a got a text from a Sox fan this morning saying "Cubs are goin down today!! Get ready to lose." and I didn't even remember they were playing this week. I know some people will read this and say hell no but I feel most people will agree there is not the same buzz in Chicago this year for this series. But maybe things will change this weekend.
