Scott Rickenbach’s Free Pick Opinion Play for MLB Wednesday: OVER the total in Los Angeles Angels vs Colorado @ 10:05 PM ET – Saunders vs Marquis – Of the 14 interleague match-ups on Wednesday, this is the only game featuring a pitching match-up with two starting hurlers whom each have an ERA of under 4 on the season. That said, it may be a surprise to some that this is one of the few games where the posted total has actually risen by a half-run today. Why the move upward with this total in a game that one would think would be a pitchers’ duel? Timing is everything! First off, the Angels got some big momentum from yesterday’s win as they put an end to the Rockies long winning streak. Secondly, you can bet that the Rockies are looking to bounce back big and their offense had played a key role in their big winning streak. That included scoring 11 runs in the opener of this series. Also, the Rockies should be able to hit Saunders quite well in this match-up.

Joe Saunders of the Angels has only two really strong outings in his last seven starts. In the other five games, Saunders has allowed 24 earned runs on 37 hits and 13 walks in just 29.2 innings of work. That works out to a 7.28 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. In other words, Saunders could be in for a tough outing against the Rockies here. However, Colorado’s pitcher, Jason Marquis, is also primed to get roughed up here. He’s off of back to back starts where his pitch count has been at least 110. Marquis has shown in the past that he tends to struggle when he’s in a situation where he’s been a bit over used in prior outings. We believe he will struggle against a solid Angels lineup that will build momentum off of last night’s win. Add in the other factor that both bullpens have struggled often this season and you can see why we’re recommending a small play on OVER the total in the Los Angeles Angels game Wednesday.
