Paige Will Establish Herself as WWE's Next Big Diva

Sharon GlencrossApr 18, 2014

Look for newcomer Paige to make her mark on WWE in 2014 and emerge as one of its top Divas.

She’s already off to a great start, winning the Divas Championship from A.J. Lee in a huge upset on the April 7 edition of Raw.

It was one of the most memorable segments on an already memorable show. Capitalizing on Lee's arrogance, Paige goaded the champion into an impromptu match and proceeded to win the title to the shock of nearly everyone.

The 21-year-old then defeated Alicia Fox in a solid non-title match on the April 14 edition of the flagship show.

Paige’s two appearances on the main roster have confirmed what anyone who has ever seen NXT, the company's developmental show, already knew: The British star is one of the best and most technically competent female wrestlers on the roster.

Honestly, she’s probably been ready for years now—she’s been wrestling since her teens. (I’m not entirely sure why WWE held off on calling her up and sending her on the road, although it’s likely her young age had something to do with it. Maybe the company didn’t feel she was mature enough to handle the gruelling road schedule. )

Aside from her in-ring talent, she also stands out thanks to her unique look. Similar to Amy “Lita” Dumas, Mickie James and Lee, Paige doesn’t look like an FHM or Maxim model. She’s very pretty, of course, but it’s in a girl-next-door type of way.

Like Dumas, James and Lee before her, the young Diva can appeal to many young female fans as a “big sister” type. She’s cool. She’s relatable.

Her promos skills, while not spectacular, are very solid. During her in-ring confrontation with Lee on last Monday’s Raw, she portrayed a significant amount of gutsiness and confidence on the mic.

She will also benefit from a great first challenger in the form of second-generation star Tamina Snuka.

Snuka emerged triumphant from an all-Diva Battle Royal on Tuesday’s edition of Main Event to become the No. 1 contender. The two will now face off for the Paige’s newly won title at next month’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

Snuka is a great women’s wrestler who, for whatever reason, has never gotten her full due in WWE.

It’s easy to see her and Paige churning out a fantastic bout at Extreme Rules, particularly if management gives them enough time.

Paige will presumably retain—it’s much too early to strip her of the belt, and a loss now would wreck all her credibility.

After emerging from Extreme Rules triumphant, she could potentially continue feuding with Tamina or participate in a program with a returning A.J. Lee. She could also start a program with someone different, like Summer Rae or Natalya. There are many directions WWE can go with her right now.

One thing is for sure: 2014 will be the year of Paige.
